What is the NextGen AI Challenge?

The NextGen AI Innovation Challenge is a two-day hackathon hosted by Morgan State University's Center for Equitable AI & Machine Learning Systems (CEAMLS).

High school and college students compete to build innovative AI-powered software solutions that improve teaching, learning, engagement, or access in K-12 education.

No prior AI experience is required. Hands-on workshops are provided throughout the event so every participant can learn, build, and compete.

Morgan State University is a Historically Black University (HBCU) committed to advancing equitable, inclusive, and socially responsible AI/ML systems for the benefit of all communities.

The challenge is open to high school and college students of all skill levels. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced developer, you are welcome to join! Even an individual student can participate, not necessarily a group.
There are two platform tracks: macOS and Windows. You also choose a design approach: Gamified Learning or Instructional Learning. Mix and match to create your ideal solution.
No prior AI experience is required. We host AI workshops on both days of the event to bring everyone up to speed with the tools, techniques, and frameworks you'll need to build your solution.
You can form your own team before the event or get matched with other participants during the Team Formation session on the morning of Day 1. Teams typically consist of 2–4 members. Solo participation is also welcome — individuals can compete on their own!
Bring your laptop, your charger, and your student ID. All meals and snacks are provided. Come ready to learn, collaborate, and build!

Projects are judged on four criteria:
  • Innovation — originality and creativity of the solution
  • K-12 Impact — potential to improve education outcomes
  • Technical Implementation — code quality and use of AI
  • Presentation — clarity and effectiveness of the demo
Yes! Free parking is available on-site for all participants and guests.
Yes! All meals are provided for both days: Breakfast, lunch and dinner on Day 1, and breakfast and lunch on Day 2. Snacks and refreshments are available throughout the event.
